If you read my previous article, My Book Competition Using Historical Perspective, I discussed the competition I face promoting my books, and that time played an important role on influencing why a person reads, or does not read (in the case of audio books). This article speaks to the time issue.

But first, why read a book? The answer is as complicated as the people who read them. But unlike what you get from television or movies which dictates what images you see, with a book, everyone creates their own illustration based on their own experiences.

Everyone reading this article is successful, because successful people find the time to read. It may be only for twenty minutes at a time here and there, but they read. Most successful people hate stopping in the middle of something, and they like to chew on what they’ve read. So, giving them a book with chapters that fits a small timespan only makes sense.

How long is a typical novel chapter? There is no set amount of words or pages in a chapter. The author breaks where they feel most comfortable. But the best answer is 3,000 - 5,000 words. On average, the lower end of those numbers is what can be read in twenty minutes. I recently listened to James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge’s book, I, Michael Bennett and the chapters were very short. Yes, there are many excellent books with chapters longer than that, but remember, you don’t have the time to read them – unless you don’t mind stopping in the middle.

Don’t make time the issue. Surely you can find twenty minutes a day. In a month you could read a book. Perhaps you don’t think reading a book a month is worthwhile, or, you won’t retain the information from day-to-day. Both are wrong views to take, especially because you’re a successful person. If a story creates a strong memory, the period of time that a person is able to recall it exists. Choosing a story that fits your schedule and your likes shouldn’t be that difficult, but if turns out to not work for you, get another. Successful people don’t linger on a failed project or regret moving on. Instead they learn from the experience.

This is where I step in to solicit you to read my books. I have purposefully written what are termed, beach reads, with chapters that fit a twenty-minute schedule. I won’t fault you if you don’t stay with my books, but only ask that you at least give them a try.
