Adding a New Writing Lane

Left turn ahead? Perhaps. I have been thinking about taking a departure from writing fiction novels and short stories to try my hand at writing a biography. It’s been on my mind for a while. I am fascinated by the idea of attempting to capture someone’s life in print.

Last year, I met a local dance instructor who has at least regional notoriety and appears to have had a long, successful, and interesting career. I recently contacted him to see if he would be interested in collaborating with me on his bio. We have our first meeting later this month.

Unlike writing a novel where all the information comes from me, a biography will take more discipline and being a good listener will be key. I also expect that writing a biography will take much longer than writing a work of fiction, because going back to the source(s) for clarification or new information may not be easy.

As much as I am looking forward to this, I am as much uneasy. Taking on a project of capturing someone else’s life is a huge responsibility. But, I wouldn’t have come this far being timid.
